The mountain and its forested region have 16 small and large lakes of crystal blue-green color. They are filled by numerous small rivers and streams and are mutually connected by cascades and waterfalls. Lakes are separated by travertine barriers - the basic feature of the park.

Large forestry complexes, exceptional natural beauty, lakes and waterfalls, flora and fauna, mountain air, contrasting colors of autumn, forest trails and wooden bridges and more are part of a complex which was listed as UNESCO world heritage in 1979, among the first ones in the world.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is a distinctive geological and hydrogeological phenomenon of karst. Complex Plitvice Lakes was declared a national park in 1949.
